What concentration means
Concentration describes how much material is present in a given volume of liquid. It is written as an amount per volume, for example mg per mL. Concentration is simply the total amount of material divided by the total volume of liquid.
mg, mcg, and mL
Milligrams (mg) and micrograms (mcg) are units of mass — how much material there is. Millilitres (mL) are a unit of volume — how much liquid there is. 1 mg equals 1,000 mcg. Mass and volume are different measurements, so a concentration always pairs one with the other.
More liquid lowers concentration
If the amount of material stays the same and more liquid is added, that same material is spread across a larger volume. The amount contained in each mL therefore becomes smaller.
Less liquid raises concentration
If less liquid is added, the same amount of material occupies a smaller volume, so each mL contains more material.
How U-100 units relate to mL
A U-100 syringe is marked in 100 units across 1 mL. Each unit therefore equals 0.01 mL, 10 units equal 0.1 mL, and 50 units equal 0.5 mL. Units are a measure of volume on that syringe scale, not a measure of mass.
Why careful measurement matters
Small errors in either the volume of liquid or the arithmetic change the resulting concentration, and every downstream calculation inherits that error. Measuring accurately, writing values down, and checking the math twice keeps results consistent and reproducible.
